Brushing cannot thoroughly clean all the surfaces of your teeth like the dentist, dental assistants, and dental hygienists can. Even flossing cannot reach all the areas of the teeth that our dental tools can reach. We also check for oral cancer at dental exams, which can thereby help prevent gum disease if caught early. A quick tip: right after your dental exam, schedule your next appointment to make sure exams happen regularly!
Your gums are bleeding because you have some level of gingivitis. The best thing to do is to floss more frequently. The best way to fight gingivitis is to remove more bacteria. As you floss and the bacteria is removed, your gums will bleed less and feel less irritated. Always let us know about any symptoms with your gums so we can check for other underlying issues.
The toothbrush you choose should have soft bristles and not be too big for your mouth. The right size of toothbrush is critical for reaching all surfaces of the teeth. We recommend that you use a toothpaste that contains at least 0.24% fluoride to help strengthen your tooth enamel. The type of toothpaste you choose may also depend on what your goal is for your teeth (sensitivity, whitening, etc.).

Dr. Joe Schmidt was born and raised in Lewiston, Idaho. From an early age, it was Dr. Schmidt’s dream to pursue a career in dentistry to serve his friends and those in his community.
After a brief collegiate baseball career, Dr. Schmidt returned to Lewiston to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Lewis-Clark State College. During this time, Dr. Schmidt also worked with a fishing guide focusing on steelhead and sturgeon on Idaho’s Salmon, Snake, and Clearwater Rivers.
Dr. Schmidt went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Creighton University, in Omaha, Nebraska. Following dental school, Dr. Schmidt has worked in various locations .
When not in the office, Dr. Schmidt can likely be found skiing, mountain biking, at one of the local rivers casting a fly, or having fun with his newborn son Miles.
Beyond outdoor pursuits, Dr. Schmidt’s passion for dentistry is evident in his commitment to ongoing continuing education and offering the best and latest techniques for his patients. Dr. Schmidt is a member of the American Dental Association, Idaho State Dental Association, and Oregon Dental Association.
